Navigator is a true distributed control system made up of any number of 'smart' system components, from a single machine up to thousands on any system.The purpose is to provide complete flexibility in system design and configuration from the simplest small theater up to an entire theme park full of machinery.

The unique topography of the Navigator network means that there is no central point of control in the system. Each "node" or device in the network is an independent processor, completely capable of functioning either by itself or as part of a network. When networked together, nodes can share information and computing power across the network in real time without recognizing boundaries between processors - essentially making one computer out of many separate processors.

This provides an extraordinarily scalable and flexible system of components while at the same time making the system almost impossible to kill - the lack of a central processor means that any part of the system can fail without taking the rest of the network with it, allowing you to continue with show operations uninterrupted. Science fiction fans may recognize this approach to stability from "hive mind" and "Borg" stories, where the community is made from individuals but eliminating individuals does not adversely affect the community. Systems can be made from one machine or many, as simply and easily as plugging in and "assimilating" additional components.
